Finding a Primary Care Physician (PCP/Hausartz) is not easy. There is currently a lack of doctors who are able to take new patients. Many families have called offices on the phone and other families have stopped by different practices in order to inquire about availability. This can be a frustrating, time-consuming process.
There are a number of pediatricians in the area. Most of them are proficient in English. If your child needs any specialized services, it is best to get a referral from your pediatrician to the specialist.
As with doctors, you will have to call to find dentists who are accepting new patients. Generally, insurance will pay for an adult teeth cleaning once per year. To have a thorough teeth cleaning for your child, you will most likely have to pay out of pocket.
In terms of orthodontics, there are times when insurance will cover the cost. It is best to get a referral from a dentist.
Kindergeld, or child support, is a monthly benefit for all parents in Germany. The sum is fixed at 250 euros per child per month and is typically paid directly into the parent's bank account. This is distributed from the Family Benefits Office (Familienkasse), through the Federal Employment Agency.
Both EU Citizens and foreign nationals are eligible for this service, as long as you have a valid residence permit. Child support will continue to be distributed until you child is either 18 or 25, the latter applying to students in higher education.
Applications for child support can be completed online at the Federal Employment Agency (in German).
